Five Word Film Reviews

UPDATE I’ve been slacking off recently and not done any reviews since I went to China.  I’ve updated with the last 4 I watched and I might do some retrospective reviews as well.

Not sure whether or not you want to watch that supposedly great film? Well you’ve come to right place… Welcome to my five word film reviews!

I was watching a film last night and came up with the idea of writing a quick 5 word review for every film I watch. Sounds a bit arduous, but I’m sure it won’t be that bad. How hard can it be to think of 5 words to describe a film?!

Now I’m not going to write retrospectively about films I watched years ago, but if I watch a film (and I’ve got a lot in the queue) then I’ll add a note on here, so keep checking back!

So without further ado…

24 City – Thought provoking; quite heavy going

A Scanner Darkly – Unfortunately places style over substance

Anchorman – Completely overrated; laughed about once

Be Kind Rewind - Warm and sincere; typical Gondry

Children of Men - Brilliantly realised dystopian nightmare; chilling.

Walk the Line - The story of a legend

Pan’s Labyrinth – Exceedingly dark fairytale. Wonderful film.

I Am Legend – Great visuals, but ultimately disappointing.

Blood Diamond - Action packed, despite ending weakly.

Withnail & I – Didn’t do anything for me.

Fargo – Great characters and plot; bleak.

Rambo – Ninety minutes of pure testosterone.

Belleville Rendez-vous – Surreal animation with little speech

The Royal Tenenbaums - Understated and ultimately underwhelming too

2001: A Space Odyssey – Great cinema, difficult to follow

Quantum of Solace – Really disappointing after Casino Royale

Flags of Our Fathers – Bringing humanity to war. Great.

Letters From Iwo Jima – Skilfully shows the other side.

The anchorman comments are clearly incorrect Mr Hyde. It is an all time classic film with a strong cast.

Mr Hyde you always seem to find the negative in everything that is good. Your blood diamond review hasnt done the film any justice whatsoever. As a film lover myself I find your “5 word fim reviews rather bland”. Action packed may be correct but the ending was far from weak. You have a lot to learn Mr Hyde.

Nothing is perfect Mr Sedwell, not even you. I can’t help it if the ending of Blood Mountain seemed tacked on. There was no need for the bit in London. Everyone knows what was going to happen there so there was really no need to show it. The bit on the mountainside would have made a perfect ending, but instead it was decided that we needed to see the almost obligatory Hollywood happy ending. It was still a very good film though.

By the way, your little review of my site was 6 words long. Was that an intentional ploy or did you just get carried away? Not as easy as it looks is it?!
